As US court papers filed by Netflix claimed that scots lawyer Fiona Harvey's £132million lawsuit against the streaming giant should be dismissed because the drama series is 'fictionalised', Gadd, 35, said the production was 'not a beat-by-beat recounting of events'.
Netflix has asked a judge to throw out a multi-million lawsuit filed by Baby Reindeer’s real life Martha, Fiona Harvey.
Gadd said Harvey visited him constantly at London’s Hawley Arms bar where he worked and sent him “thousands of emails, hundreds of voicemails, and a number of handwritten letters”, some of which were sexually explicit or threatening.“It is not a documentary or an attempt at realism,” Gadd said. “While the series is based on my life and real-life events and is, at its core, emotionally true, it is not a beat-by-beat recounting of the events and emotions I experienced as they transpired.
The court papers say that “well before the Series was released”, Harvey was publicly accused of stalking and harassing Scottish attorney Laura Wray, wife of late Labour Party Member of Parliament Jimmy Wray, and politician Donald Dewar, the inaugural First Minister of Scotland. “The Series never mentions Harvey. Harvey became news only after she proclaimed she was the supposed inspiration for the Martha character. In April, the Daily Record revealed Harvey was the real life stalker depicted in Baby Reindeer.
“After asserting – under oath – that ‘Martha’ is not Fiona Harvey, it then engages in more attacks of Ms Harvey, allegations that are irrelevant and have nothing to do with the litigation or the ‘true story’ of Baby Reindeer. “On the one hand they’re saying it’s not her and on the other they are going overboard to badmouth her by showing how similar she was to Martha.”
