Until recently, that is, when Netflix remembered that it was not, in fact, somebody trying to convince us of their coolness at a party, but a profit-making business. The company, which was founded in 1997, said last month that account-sharing “undermines our long-term ability to invest in and improve Netflix”, and that they were expecting to roll out paid sharing in the first few months of 2023.

But last night, a document appeared on their website: a set of guidelines, currently only applicable to users in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, detailing a password crackdown. The document said that users of an account will have to log into the Wi-Fi of the home in which it was set up every 31 days to retain their use of the password –
