Rebel Ridge is part Rambo, part rip-roaring political commentary.
as one of the finest genre filmmakers of his generation and might just be the flat-out best movie I’ve seen this year, even if I was forced to watch it in my basement. is as lean and muscular as its protagonist, Terry Richmond, played by the British actor Aaron Pierre in a performance that deserves to make him a superstar. In the film’s opening scene, Terry is bicycling toward the rural Alabama town of Shelby Springs when he’s intentionally struck by a police car.
This encounter lasts less than eight minutes but is the inciting incident for the remainder of the movie. Terry wants his cousin out of jail, and Terry wants his money back. Terry is also, we quickly learn in a mischievously funny reveal, an ex-Marine and martial arts expert.
And yet the film’s relative lack of spectacular violence is a creative coup all its own. Like John Rambo, Terry Richmond is a man fluent in violence who’s searching for peace—“they drew first blood, not me” declares Rambo in his film’smoment. But in Saulnier’s film, the relatively brief displays of Terry’s capacity create their own riveting feeling of constantly impending danger. He’s a human weapon who mostly remains sheathed, but always only partially.
