Many thought the Nets had a potential dynasty when they added James Harden to the duo of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in Jan. 2021. Just over two years later, all three are gone. It ends Brooklyn's much-hyped hypothetical era, writes Alex__Schiffer.
While Pierce and Garnett were past their prime at the time of the trade, the parallels between the two failed Nets super teams go beyond their early playoff exits.
Durant and Irving did what they wanted in Brooklyn. Coach Kenny Atkinson didn’t even make it through the first season with KD and Irving together, and the team soon lost much of the culture he had helped build. Instead, Durant requested a trade last summer, and later called for Marks and Nash to be fired. They kept their jobs and Durant eventually rescinded his trade request, but Nash didn’t last 10 games into the season before being replaced by Vaughn. This all doesn’t fall on Marks or the coaching staff either. Durant and Irving got a lot of what they wanted throughout their time in Brooklyn.
