Two days after Kyrie Irving requested a trade from the Nets, he has been traded to the Mavericks to join forces with Luka Dončić, sources tell ShamsCharania. More on a developing story, days ahead of the NBA trade deadline:
The end of a Nets eraand Irving era. It was marred by shoulder injuries, vaccine mandates and just one playoff series win. Dinwiddie would have given the Nets stability had he never left in free agency. Now he gets the look he deserved as the franchise point guard.I’m talking to those around the league and the Nets got a great return for Irving. Dinwiddie returns to Brooklyn and gives the Nets a family face who has played with multiple players on the roster.
But by trading away Dinwiddie and Finney-Smith, and by conceding a future first-rounder, the team has limited the avenues it has to continue building this roster. That’s how trades for stars like Irving work, of course, but it’s still worth noting that this is an enormous, all-in decision from the team’s front office.Dallas fell to 0-7 without Dončić on Saturday, and the team’s inability to replicate his offensive genius anytime he sits has been an enormous failure this season.
But another problem this season has been the Mavericks’ defense, and the inclusion of Finney-Smith only creates more questions on that end. It’s not surprising that the team moved quickly to complete this trade, and team sources indicate that the Mavericks will continue exploring more moves in the coming days prior to Thursday’s trade deadline.
