Cucumbers are a common ingredient in salads and can stay fresh for several days when stored in the fridge. However, there's one food item you should never store them with. While cucumbers and tomatoes may make a great combination in a sandwich, they don't store well together. According to research by PlumbNation , tomatoes release ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that speeds up ripening.
If cucumbers are kept at temperatures below 4C for extended periods, they can suffer from chilling injuries, resulting in water-soaked spots and a reduced shelf life. As for tomatoes, they should be kept at room temperature and out of direct sunlight, reports the Mirror . Storing them stem-side down can also help extend their freshness. Once cut, tomatoes should be refrigerated to slow down the spoiling process.
