Many male animals—including lions and gorillas—slay such younglings to ensure all future offspring are theirs. “Within an hour of losing her mate, a female at a nesting box will be surrounded by males,” says Karl Berg, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and co-author of the new study. Amid this bloodshed, however, researchers noticed a more peaceful resolution to familial upheaval: Adoptions of unrelated chicks by stepparents was just as common as infanticide.
