Australians returning from abroad with pets will be subject to new animal screening requirements which will throw travel plans for hundreds of people into chaos.

From 1 March 2023, owners must provide documentation to prove their pet has been vaccinated against rabies in the last 12 months – down from 24.

Cats and dogs are also required to be officially identified by government-appointed vets who do not see members of the public. There are fears backlogs in appointments will impact travel arrangements for those wishing to return home as quarantine spaces are already booked out for months.
