Plans have been submitted to transform a former bank in Winckley Square into serviced apartments

There are proposed plans to change the building that used to house international bank Svenska Handelsbanken from offices into eight serviced apartments with no external alternations to the facade of the grade II listed building. The site which is located on the western side of the Square is easily accessible where both the bus station and railway station are within walking distance without the need for a motor vehicle.

In terms of appearance, the heritage statement said: “Winckley Square is Preston’s finest example of a privately planned Georgian residential development modelled on the fashionable London squares of the period. “The townscape quality and character of the Square is established by the largely three storey, red brick townhouses that front onto the Square’s focal point garden.

“The homes built on the Square have proved to be remarkably adaptable. Such adaptability has been a key factor in their survival. “The area became established as Preston’s primary professional district and still houses a significant number of the City’s legal and accounting businesses.”
