The aroma hits customers as soon as they walk through the door at new bakery Casa Bake. There are no additives, preservatives or other nasties — just good-quality ingredients, such as Belgian chocolate, for the decadent, rich brownies.shop can buy sourdough, rustic white, focaccia and white toast bread.

Among the more unusual finds are sweet potato bread and butter bread, a hedonistic tear-and-share loaf. Mother-of-two Daniela Bortea bakes the bread, while her mum Mariana Honceriu is in charge of the cakes, including specialities from Romania, the country they left behind 15 years ago to start a new life in England.

Daniela juggles baking around her family, starting at 6am, breaking off to take her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter to nursery, then opening the shop at 10am, while her husband, Marius, a businessman, does the school run with their son, who is eight. She said:"I started to bake for pleasure after my second child, when I was on maternity leave.

I bought a food mixer with a voucher I got for my birthday.and we just baked for friends and family, but we were making too many, so we said, let's try to sell them.

" A former dog grooming parlour, in Arnot Hill Road, has been transformed into a cosy artisan bakery with seating for ten. Sandwiches, cakes, sausage rolls and scones are sold, along with hot and cold drinks. On the first day, the shop sold out of sourdough within an hour. Without doubt, the most indulgent is butter bread, a soft, luscious loaf that Daniela thanks her friend Danielka Mirchevska for.

Daniela said:"My friend from Macedonia had this recipe. Every time when we had Christmas or other celebrations she was bringing the big massive bread and I told her I had to learn to make it. The butter inside makes it quite soft. It's unique.

"Mountain cake, a Romanian favourite, is modelled on the Carpathian Mountains. Ten layers of sponge, sandwiched together with caramel cream, the triangular chocolate-edged slabs are finished off with a sprinkle of desiccated coconut to symbolise the snowy peaks. The intricate job of thinly slicing the intricate layers of sponge is perfected by Daniela's father, Dorin, who has been a builder all his life. Another Romanian speciality is amandine, a chocolate-layered cake filled with cream.

Another layer cake, this time with honey and cream, is medovik, which originates from Russia. Daniela said:"I am quite hospitable and I like to be a host and to give the best. I think this will work well with what we do.

"When you have a small business, you put all your soul into it. I was stressing for months until we got the place ready. I couldn't sleep for a few weeks because we needed to sort so many things.

"We wanted to postpone opening but people were 'when are you going to open? ' so we started small and will build up the products with something new each week. "Ladies from a nearby fitness centre have been coming in. They said 'the smell is killing us.

We will need to work harder now'.

" Daniela, who has a master's degree in public administration and European politics, originally wanted to be a journalist but was too shy. Instead, she put her creativity to good use, writing a novel, and before the shop had planned to publish a second book.

"Used the gel for dry eyelids. Twice a day for the first few days, now once a day. Completely cleared up within a couple of weeks"Many say the town is deprived and neglected, but one building holds the community togetherThe retired senior officer's evidence is considered crucial by the families of Valdo Calocane's victimsJessica Stratton says there was no room to leave the furniture in her housePeter Brooks was jailed for life after being found guilty of attempted murder
