Cuyahoga County is piloting a new Benefit Bridge Program to support those who see a decrease in government assistance after getting a new job or a raise in wages so they can grow wealth and transition off public assistance for good.

Cuyahoga County is piloting a new Benefit Bridge Program to support those who see a decrease in government assistance after getting a new job or a raise in wages so they can get over the so-called benefits cliff and achieve financial stability.
Take, for example, a single mother of one, working 30 hours a week at a low-paying job and relying on a certain amount of public assistance for food, housing or medical care to support her family beyond what her income can sustain. The Benefit Bridge program can help her get beyond that point by supplementing any loss in assistance while she takes steps to advance at work or get a better job to support her family long-term. The program can also assist her in getting her GED, applying for jobs, securing housing and opening a savings account – all goals that come with their own $250 incentive bonuses.
“Look at public assistance as a safety net for individuals,” Bounds said. “This idea is to empower them so that’s no longer needed.”
