Field umpire Michael Pell was one of four men arrested in a police investigation into suspicious Brownlow betting.A police investigation is ongoing into bets allegedly placed on players to win votes in games officiated by field umpire Michael Pell during the 2022 season. In addition to the payout limit of $250 for any round bets, the new safeguards include a total ban for anyone involved in the AFL from placing bets, and spot audits of all AFL staff.
