Campaigners are calling for payouts of £10,000 or more
A new champion has joined the chorus demanding compensation for WASPI women whose retirement plans were disrupted due to an increase in the state pension age. The Women Against State Pension Inequality are campaigning for financial redress for women born in the 1950s who were not adequately informed by the Department for Work and Pensions about their state pension age rising from 60 to 65, to bring it in line with the men.
"They had their retirement plans upended, often with little time to make alternative arrangements. Many were forced to continue working, some fell into poverty, and others had to rely on family or benefits to get by." Ms Harris remarked: "While it's impossible to fully makeup for the years of lost pension and the stress these women endured, we need to start somewhere. Some WASPI campaigners are calling for upwards of £10,000 and closer to the full pension they feel they've missed out on. The Government needs to engage in serious discussions with these women to find a fair solution."
