Car tax changes will be introduced by the new Labour government
Company car drivers have been alerted to potential tax bills of £7,110 due to HMRC within weeks. The warning comes as a result of impending changes to car tax and Vehicle Excise Duty under the new Labour Party government.
However, the reclassification of these models as passenger vehicles will eliminate this benefit, with some road users expected to pay over £7,000. This change will also cause the BIK paid by employees to increase by thousands of pounds annually.

Used Car Buyers Face £410 Fee Under New Labour Government MeasuresThe Labour government's new measures introduce a £410 fee for some used car buyers, adding to the existing Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) payments. This fee, known as the Expensive Car Supplement (ECS), targets second-hand cars originally priced at over £40,000, making it more expensive to own these vehicles. UK automotive experts warn that buyers face a potential 'trap' when purchasing used cars due to the lack of clarity regarding the original list price, especially considering the inclusion of optional extras in the £40,000 threshold. \This extra charge, initially implemented in 2017, has previously exempted electric vehicles (EVs). However, this exemption is set to end in 2025, meaning that EV owners will also be subject to the ECS. The government is considering raising the £40,000 threshold for EVs in the future to encourage their adoption, but this decision is yet to be made.
