Shards of glass collected from the destruction of European cathedrals, synagogues, and chapels during World War II are the focus of a new exhibit openingThe exhibit guide explains each of the 25 works, sharing this insight into the project:
Frederick Alexander McDonald served as a U.S. Army chaplain during World War II under General Omar Bradley in the 12th Army Group. As he traveled through war-torn Europe, Chaplin McDonald found himself dismayed by the destruction of sacred places, and he begins saving small shards from the shattered stained glass windows in hopes that one day they could serve as a testament to the sacrifices made by so many.
Today, 25 works of art incorporating the shards, along with Chaplain McDonald’s memories of them, have been created by 13 artists and assembled into a special exhibition, offering hope that such destruction will never be seen again. The collection will be on display until January 26, 2025, at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum. It will then go on permanent display at the Presidio Interfaith Center in San Francisco, California.
