The variant KP.3, which emerged in early April, is believed to be behind the current spike
Health bosses have issued an update on the new Covid-19 variant believed to be fuelling the current surge in cases.
The KP.3 variant, which emerged in early April, belongs to a new group of coronavirus strains known as FLiRT and now accounts for a large proportion of cases. According to the latest figures, cases have risen by 12.2% in just a week, with 3,230 people reporting they've contracted the virus in the seven days up to June 26, up from 2,880 the previous week.
A recent post from the UK Health and Security Agency's official X account urges people to check out its latest update on the new Covid variant. The linked blog post explains that it's "normal for viruses to mutate and change", and reassures that health chiefs are gathering more data on the variant to better understand how it interacts with our immune systems and how to optimise protection.
