The Our Town Hall project is expected to be finished in summer 2026
New developments have been underway in Albert Square after two trees planted last year failed to establish. The area, which is being reconstructed as part of Manchester City Council's Our Town Hall project, has been fenced off this week whilst the new trees have been planted.
The whole renovation project, which began in 2018, is set to be finished by summer 2026 - two years later than expected and £76m over budget due to the Covid-19 pandemic and "unforeseen circumstances". A Manchester City Council spokesperson said: "We are transforming Albert Square, creating a world class civic square and events space, and a fitting setting for the iconic town hall. "As part of this, 10 new trees were planted last winter. Two of these - both Japanese pagoda trees - failed to establish properly and are being replaced like-for-like at no extra cost to the Council. We look forward to seeing them all flourish." The ten semi-mature trees had initially been planted last February, with the trees outside Fountain House and Rajdoot not establishing properly. To minimise future disruption, the removal has been timed to roughly coincide with the removal of cabins in the areas. The council will face no costs for the replanting of these trees as it is being paid for by the sub-contractors who provided and planted them originally. When they were initially planted, Councillor Luthfur Rahman, then Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “The installation of these new trees is a visual reminder that work is progressing on the project. “These trees have been chosen with great care: for their quality, maturity and diversity, and their positioning on the outer edges of the square will make them a major enhancement to this world-class space.” The selection consists of seven tulip trees , two Japanese maple trees, and one Foxglove tree and were specifically chosen to fit in with other species across the city and to increase the biodiversity within the city centre.
