The new Labour government has not said whether they will implement reforms to PIP, proposed by the Conservatives earlier this year

Disabled people are at risk of "being hit where it hurts" if new reforms to benefits were to go ahead, claims a Nottingham disability charity. Disability Support, which is a registered non-profit organisation based in Basford, has hit out at Conservative plans to reform Personal Independence Payments .

Sue Lynn is the charity's Benefits Advisor, and she says the consultation has already worried many clients. "It’s causing a lot of panic and - as is often the way - it's the most vulnerable people who are being the most hard hit."If the plans were to go ahead, it would take away disabled people's independence and their freedom. We’ve been asking our clients their opinions, and I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a single person who said this was a good idea.

Between £290 and £737 is paid to recipients per month to help assist with the extra costs associated with having a disability. Former Conservative DWP minister Mel Stride suggested it wasn't clear if the policy was effective and working for individuals. "It’s not just about coping, it’s about living, and I’m sure we will see some upsetting news stories in the future as a direct result if this happens."

"People's quality of life would definitely decrease. Just to apply this benefit alone, they’d need a lot of help and they'd need to adapt and learn how to use the vouchers." "If people aren’t given their independence to make their own informed choices about what they are spending their own money on, then it’s just invalidating their experiences as an individual, as it would to any of us, with disabilities or not.
