DWP will be sending letters to older people who may be eligible for Pension Credit next month.
The Department for Work and Pensions has announced that it will be “directly contacting” people over State Pension age currently in receipt of Housing Benefit” who may be eligible for Pension Credit, but are not claiming it. The move aims to increase take-up of the means-tested benefit which is not only worth around £3,900 each year in additional State Pension income, but also provides access to Winter Fuel Payments.
The DWP Minister went on to say that in the longer-term, the DWP will be “bringing together the administration of Pension Credit and Housing Benefit as soon as operationally possible” so that “pensioner households receiving Housing Benefit also receive any Pension Credit to which they are entitled”. Your income includes assumed income from savings and capital over £10,000. This means they cannot claim Pension Credit or pension age Housing Benefit until they are both State Pension age. Before this DWP change, a mixed age couple could be eligible to claim the more generous State Pension age benefits when just one of them reached State Pension age.
