DWP is urging PIP claimants not to ignore the award review letter when it arrives.
The latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions show there are now 3.5 million people across Great Britain claiming Personal Independence Payment , including nearly 219,000 living in Scotland. The number of people in receipt of the disability benefit is at an all-time high, even though the overall total does not take into account some 109,385 Scots who have transferred from PIP to Adult Disability Payment .
DWP Minister Mims Davies MP recently explained that if this happens, PIP can be backdated to the date of the claim, which means claimants whose current PIP award ends and their payments stop, would receive any missing money to ensure they don’t lose out on crucial financial support - if their renewal claim is successful.
Top Money Stories Today The written response from Ms Davies was given after DUP MP Jim Shannon asked the DWP what steps it is taking to help support disabled people financially while they wait for decision outcomes on PIP and other benefits. “Where a claimant delays making their renewal claim, but submits it shortly before their existing award ends, they could experience a break in payment, but the award can be backdated to the date of claim ensuring that claimants don’t lose out in these circumstances.”
