The new map shows the numerous alerts and warnings in place across the Midlands where the flooding has been most severe
The Environment Agency has released a floodmap showing the areas most at risk of serious problems. Storm Babet has caused chaos with more rain expected today and more than 360 flood warnings in place.
Labour MP Toby Perkins said about 400 houses in his Chesterfield constituency have been flooded and many people “have no idea where they’re going to be living”. Standing on a road in his constituency that was “under water yesterday and has significant damage”, Mr Perkins told BBC One’s Today programme: “About 400 houses have been flooded, many of the businesses here have lost all their stock and will be closed.
Another red “danger to life” warning is in place along the east coast of Scotland today and more rain is widely forecast. Ms Foley said: “We have over 360 flood warnings and many flood alerts across the country”. “It’s really important that people stay away from swollen rivers. It’s very, very important that people don’t drive through flood waters, all it takes is up to 30 centimetres of fast flowing water to actually move a car.
He said: “We declared a major incident at four o’clock yesterday afternoon, that was because of intense rainfall and intense flooding that we expected to get worse as the day went on. We had multiple rescues last night. We are expecting the peak in the middle of the county at 4am this morning which will then go further to the south of the county later on this morning into early afternoon.
