The ECHO spoke to Liverpool director Barney Pell Scholes about his new short film
Growing up in the Sefton Park area, Barney would hear about his Jewish grandparents' shop on Smithdown Road. Chiefly, he was told about the time in 1947 when his grandad Louis Scholnick donned his RAF uniform to defend the store from a violent anti-Semitic mob.
Before the film's release, Barney told the ECHO: "We'd been told this story about this event on Smithdown Road. I grew up not far from Smithdown Road, near Sefton Park. We were there all the time. "When I was thinking of ideas for films, I spoke to my dad and my uncle. They told me about the Sergeant's affair and the context of it.
"I wanted to make a film that talked about something that happened to my family but was also a testimony to the Liverpool Jewish community and something that could maybe last beyond and represent the community. "Barney's wife went off and did loads of Googling and found this place called The Black Country Living Museum, which is where they have recreated parts of that region throughout the decades. They have a street which is Victorian, a street which is the 1930s, which is what we used, and others.
The charity said on Friday that 1,019 hate incidents had been recorded in the last 28 days - the highest total since counting began in 1984.
