Jobs, new homes and green spaces among focus of plans

West Lancashire Council has launched a public consultation on a new Skelmersdale masterplan and released images showing how the town might look in future.

West Lancashire Council said it builds upon the success of the first phase of Skelmersdale's town centre regeneration, which has delivered construction of a new retail hub and enhanced public spaces. A mix of public and private finance, and collaboration with local groups and development partners is proposed.

Key elements include 'significant town centre commercial and residential' development, the council said. This includes new food-and-drink developments, a new well-being and leisure hub, an improved western entrance to the Concourse shopping centre and bus station, a business 'incubator' for start-up firms and new housing.

Meanwhile, other parts of the new Skelmersdale master-plan include enhanced green and recreation spaces along the River Tawd valley, a new visitor centre and revitalised town park. 'Moving forward' Labour Coun Yvonne Gagen, the leader of West Lancashire Council. said: "We’ve already achieved so much with the first phase of the town centre regeneration. Now we are moving forward strongly with the next stage of the master-plan. By focusing on sustainability, economic growth and well-being, we can create a greener, more-vibrant town and build a better life for our communities.
