A new law aimed at protecting fans from inflated ticket prices during online queues for concert tickets is being proposed in Parliament. The Sale of Tickets (Sporting and Cultural Events) Bill responds to public outcry over Ticketmaster’s use of 'dynamic pricing', which saw Oasis reunion tour tickets double in price at checkout.
A new law that could guarantee fans the maximum price they’ll be paying when queuing online for concert tickets is to be tabled in Parliament.
But detractors say that, when applied to in-demand events, the model can cause fans who have queued for hours on end to feel “pressure” to accept the inflated prices which, had they known them beforehand, might not have bothered to queue. “From a consumer protection point of view, our constituents would like some certainty and so this Bill would enshrine in statute a maximum price. It’s a sort of sale of goods thing, that the price you can see when you start the process is the price you pay.”
Ms Huq is currently developing the text for the Bill, adding: “Some of the leading pressure groups and industry bodies think it’s high time that this happened because fans just shouldn’t be ripped off. Ministers have said the Government will launch a consultation on the secondary ticket market in the autumn. Without support from the Government, it is unlikely to progress in its current form. It has also been acknowledged that dynamic pricing can be beneficial when it provides cheaper early bird tickets.
