Data shows which areas of Nottingham were most affected
Nottingham and the surrounding towns and villages saw thousands of hours of continuous sewage spillages in 2023, new data has revealed. It comes as Labour plans to crack down on water companies, see which firms empty the most sewage into England’s rivers, lakes and seas.
Harsher penalties for law-breaking will be introduced, including jail sentences of up to two years for executives who fail to cooperate or obstruct Environment Agency and Drinking Water Inspectorate investigations. More than 440,000 hours of continuous spillages took place at Severn Trent's storm overflow spills in 2023, from more than 60,000 individual incidents.
Sewage spills have contributed to a situation in which no single river in England is considered to be in good overall health, and beauty spots including Windermere in the Lake District have been polluted. Annual data from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs shows how often each water company has used storm overflow to empty excess rainwater along with sewage into the country’s waterways, and for how long those overflows were open.
Those lasted a combined total of 97,537 hours, which is also the highest of any water company in the country and equivalent to a single overflow pipe running for 75 years. Yorkshire Water’s storm overflow discharges lasted a combined total of 77,761 hours , Severn Trent Water’s lasted 60,253 hours , and South West Water’s lasted 58,249 hours .
