National Security Adviser Eduardo Año on Saturday announced that the recently enacted Maritime Zones Act and Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act empower the Philippines to assert its maritime jurisdiction amid ongoing disputes in the West Philippine Sea.
The Maritime Zones Act defines the Philippines’ authority over its internal waters, territorial seas, archipelagic waters, Exclusive Economic Zone , and continental shelf. It reinforces the Philippines’ legal standing, especially in the contested West Philippine Sea, in accordance with the 2016 Arbitral Ruling and international norms.
