'It teaches you how to offer care with minimal commodities', said one midwife

Midwives recruited to a Nottingham hospital from Africa say they are hoping to draw on their experience of working with "minimal staffing and equipment" in their home countries. The new recruits are part of a 18-strong cohort of international midwives employed by Nottingham University Hospitals .

"They don’t have as much supplies and equipment as over here but they still deliver care throughout pregnancies, sometimes with four women labouring at the same time." However, both the midwives say the job has got better day by day. "I felt the support of everyone, everyone was willing to make me feel at home," said Bernice.

"Most of the time you feel supported and cared for. It has surpassed my expectations." Esther Draycott, practice development midwife and lead for international recruitment, said: “The recruitment of these international midwives has had a huge impact on our midwifery team, diversifying our workforce, improving staffing levels and increasing the level of expertise we have in our team as each midwife brings a wealth of skills from their home country.
