This method could facilitate a wide range of applications, ranging from photonic and electronic devices to novel functional materials for energy and environmental applications.Nanoscale technology often allows scientists to creatively develop new applications by manipulating singular atoms for a variety of purposes such as nanobots for medicine.
The motivation behind the research was to overcome the challenge of achieving rapid and uniform transfer of a monolayer of nanoparticles, which is crucial for device fabrication. The lack of such a technique has hindered industrial mass production of functional nanomaterials. This allowed them to imitate the mussel and introduced excess protons to remove hydroxyl groups from the target surface. As a result, the electrostatic attraction force between the nanoparticles and the surface increased. The new method turned out to be 100 to 1,000 times faster than previous methods. Additionally, the charge-sensitive nature of the process enabled deterministic “healing” of monolayer films and “pick-and-place” nanopatterning at the wafer scale.
