The latest novel from Richard Price, author of The Wire, has been compared to a Netflix series. Price's writing style, characterized by long paragraphs and a fast-paced plot, immerses readers in the story.

In the latest novel from writer of The Wire, it can feel less like passing through successive chapters than reaching episode five on a Netflix series. Price, who is 75, is clearly master of his genre – but has come to lean heavily on his screenwriting.

(Photo: Lorraine Adams), seem to want to grip the reader by the throat and not let go, and this he achieves by writing great chunky paragraphs that flow like turbulent rivers, replete with lots of commas, precious few full stops, and little pausing for breath. \“It was one of those nights for Anthony Carter, 42, two years unemployed, two years separated from his wife and, six months into cocaine sobriety, and recently moved into his late parents’ apartment,” he writes, “when, to be alone with his thoughts, alone with his losses, was not survivable, he hit the streets, meaning the bars, one after the other.” Shortly after this miserable bar crawl, a five-storey tenement building in East Harlem collapses, and the lives of four people converge, and change forever. Price then establishes his protagonists with a swiftness that borders on the impatient. The first is Carter, buried amidst the rubble, and eventually rescued 36 hours later. If anything can snap him out of his existential crisis, it’s surviving something that by rights should have killed him.keen to make his mark. He hastens to the scene of devastation in order to document it, hoping perhaps one of the newspapers will buy his photographs, and help to kickstart his career.A few blocks away lives Royal Davis, an unhappy soul who once had hopes of becoming a basketball star but who now runs a failing funeral home in Harlem. For him, the building’s collapse is good news: one person’s disaster is another’s opportunity for brisk business. Lastly, arriving by wailingis no exception. That said, writing for the screen has clearly shifted his emphasis somewhat, and throughout this novel he remains far more focused on driving its plot forward than indulging in any literary flushes.that aided his miraculous escape, he spots a woman gazing upon him adoringly. This makes his “heart up and up like an elevator”. Elsewhere, when he experiences a moment of optimism, it feels like “the underbelly of his propulsive sense of joy forever needing to be blasted away by the force of his will”, to which the only reasonable reader response is: “Eh?” Nevertheless, the pages do keep turning. By halfway through, it can feel less like passing through successive chapters than reaching episode five on a Netflix series. And, much as with the streaming channel, you keep on watching – or reading – simply because you’ve made it this far, and might as well see how it all pans out.. When disaster strikes, people come together, they look out for one another, and reveal an instinctive humanity. This is what is at the heart of the book. Richard Price is a native New Yorker, and sois both a hymn to community, and a love letter to the city in which he lives, and so clearly loves
