The proposed bill would prohibit children under 18 years old from borrowing or viewing any materials in libraries that are deemed “harmful to juveniles.”
CINCINNATI - A new bill recently proposed in the Ohio Statehouse could restrict which books children are able to view and borrow from public libraries.
The proposal has left educational leaders concerned about how it could impact literacy for students in Ohio, including the Ohio Library Council and the Ohio Federation of Teachers. Penalties for libraries that don’t comply include a loss of state funding, which Cropper said could impact jobs in libraries and strike fear in employees that they could lose their jobs if funding is cut.“My bill makes sure that libraries can't display obscene content where children can see. It requires parental approval for minors borrowing books with adult content."
The Ohio Federation of Teachers said it will testify against the proposed bill if it reaches testimony in the statehouse. Cropper said they have union members and library staff that would join them in doing so.
