The new system means access to any of the nine centres across the Borough will only be possible via a pre-booked slot.

Access to Household Recycling Centres in Ards and North Down are moving online next week in a council bid to crack down on “waste tourism.”

For years the local authority has faced the problem of residents from outside the Borough using its HRCs as a dumping ground, with material that is often unsorted and heads straight to landfill as a result. But when the local authority then announced its plans on its social media platforms, it prompted a public outcry from hundreds of angry ratepayers.

According to the council, bookings will be made quickly and easily online, taking just a minute or two to complete.
