The trust running the hospitals said it was being taken 'extremely seriously'
Police have launched a new investigation into the Nottingham hospitals at the centre of a maternity scandal after case information was deleted. Nottingham University Hospitals , which runs the Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital, is currently subject to the largest maternity review in NHS history following dozens of baby deaths and injuries.
Nottinghamshire Police, which is already investigating failings at the city's maternity services, said its cyber crime unit would be investigating how the file - which has since been recovered - was lost. Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin said: “The fact the file had been deleted has not impacted on the investigation nor on any of our decision-making in Operation Perth.
The trust said internal and counter-fraud team investigations had already taken place but could not determine how the file was deleted. The addition of 300 new cases to the independent review takes the total number of families involved in the review to more than 2,300. The number is expected to grow to at least 2,500.
“It's completely shocking. It's babies and mums who have died or have been seriously hurt. It's horrific. Those families will now receive a letter. It must be horrific for them. How many families have blamed themselves?” She added that the 300 new cases added to the review were missed due to a "genuine misunderstanding". The 300 new cases are unrelated to the deleted file.
