A recent study refines cosmic distance measurements using red giants' oscillations, promising insights into the universe's evolution.
People have, for a long, laid on their backs and pointed at the starry sky, wondering how far these twinkling luminaries are. Measuring cosmic distances has been a point of scientific curiosity for equally long.
A recent study led by EPFL professor Richard I. Anderson is offering a beacon of hope. Anderson collaborated with Nolan Koblischke at the University of Toronto and Laurent Eyer from the University of Geneva. Their research focused on refining cosmic distance measurements by harnessing sonorous signals from giant red stars.
The TRGB is a critical point, a “standard candle” that enables astronomers to gauge cosmic distances. Astronomers can compare the known brightness of TRGB stars to their observer luminosity in distant galaxies. These comparisons allow them to estimate the star’s distance, similar to estimating the distance of a light bulb based on its luminosity.
