Rochester , N.Y. — The 126th Lilac Festival kicked off Friday at Highland Park , continuing through May 19.When I asked festival co-producer Ed Schram about the event's security, his answer was clear: "It's a lot."
Every year, with the help of the Rochester Police Department, organizers review operation plans to evaluate the safety and security of the previous year's festival."We will be doing wanding this year," Schram said. "We will be checking bags and such. There will be a limited number of people you can bring in that are 17 and under.""There’s a bunch of security checking everyone, checking their bags when they come in," Santiago said. "Absolutely safe here.
Police will be patrolling the surrounding areas, while festival security be take the lead inside the gates and emergency medical personnel will be on site. "Festival promoters have always been a great partner with us," Captain Greg Bello from the Rochester Police Department said. “ working through the different areas around here, working with the neighborhood groups in the surrounding areas and people that live in these areas to ensure that the safety aspect of things and the nuisance aspect of things has a minimal impact upon them.”
