'Over the past ten years, there’s been a focus on big cities and growth. But towns are also critical'
A new decision-making board in Nelson , described as ‘new-style politics’ by Michael Gove, has appointed leading members.
The three publicly-elected councillors for the new board represent Pendle Council, Lancashire County Council and Nelson Town Council. They are Independent Asjad Mahmood, Conservative Ash Sutcliffe and Independent Zafar Ali. They are all borough councillors too. The new board was launched at Nelson’s YES Hub.
But he focused on community involvement, saying: “We should think about creating a new tier on this board, so we have greater community contact. Currently there is a lot of Nelson activity. But a new tier on this board could continue those links over the next ten years.” He said: “We were not aware of this until a government announcement last autumn. Seventy-five towns are involved. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said most people live in towns, which are centres of civic pride and business. But many towns are suffering, as we can see in Nelson.
