🧪 Scientists have identified two proteins that help determine whether a patient’s cancer will reccur after treatment. They can be spotted in biopsy samples with a cheap, existing test widely used in cancer diagnosis 🔴 BawdenTom reports

“For patients who have these protein changes, and are therefore at increased risk of the cancer coming back, the tests could enable them to have more intensive, targeted treatments alongside radiotherapy, which could make a real difference in terms of achieving long-term control of their prostate cancer.”

“It also has the potential for automated analysis in the future, making it an attractive tool for incorporating into clinical care.” “This research is exciting because it adds important, high-quality evidence for new markers that would make this possible, and which can be measured easily, reliably, and cost-effectively.

Meanwhile, patients with a 10 per cent increase in the geminin protein were 70 per cent more likely to see their cancer returning, according to the study, published in the journalThere are more than 52,000 new cases of prostate cancer a year, making it the most common cancer among men in the UK. About 30 per cent, or 15,600, of these patients have radiotherapy as part of their primary treatment.
