More than 213,000 people have signed Age UK’s online petition calling for the UK Government to reverse the new rule.

More than 213,000 people from across Great Britain have signed an online petition created by Age UK urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves to reverse the decision to make annual Winter Fuel Payments means-tested. Shortly after the announcement on July 29, the charity launched a campaign to help protect millions of State Pension ers set to miss out on seasonal heating support this year.

Only State Pensioners in receipt of Pension Credit or other income-related benefits will automatically qualify for annual, one-off payments from the Department for Work and Pensions worth between £100 and £300. The petition can be viewed, signed and shared on the Age UK website here. Ofgem is due to announce the new energy price cap before the end of this month. Energy analysts are forecasting a 10 per cent increase on the standard tariff for millions of households from October 1 that will be in place until the end of the year.
