Aston University researchers have partnered with the National Deaf Children's Society to create informative videos aimed at supporting parents of young children diagnosed with mild hearing loss or hearing loss in one ear. The videos, available on YouTube, are designed to address the challenges and uncertainties parents often face.

Aston University researchers, Dr. Amanda Hall and Dr. Helen Pryce, have collaborated with the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) to develop a series of informative videos aimed at supporting parents of very young children diagnosed with mild hearing loss or hearing loss in one ear (unilateral deafness). These videos, readily accessible on YouTube, were produced in partnership with experts from University College London and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

A recent report published by the research team, titled 'Development of parent experience-based information resources for families of children age 0-4 years with mild/unilateral deafness,' sheds light on the numerous challenges and uncertainties faced by parents navigating this diagnosis. The report highlights that while newborn hearing screening programs in England effectively identify moderate or severe hearing loss in both ears (bilateral deafness), they also detect milder forms of bilateral deafness and unilateral deafness. To gain a comprehensive understanding of parental experiences, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews with 17 parents of children aged 0-4 with mild or unilateral deafness. The interviews explored various aspects, including the diagnosis journey, parental decision-making processes regarding their child's condition, experiences with hearing devices and assistive technologies, and advice for other parents in similar situations. The analysis revealed that parents often grapple with uncertainty, particularly surrounding mild or unilateral deafness. This uncertainty stems from several factors, such as the availability of local hearing devices or educational support, and their level of trust and adherence to medical recommendations. Parents often make decisions based on a blend of professional advice and their own observations about their child's hearing. Furthermore, evolving circumstances, such as progressive hearing loss or the child's entry into nursery, can introduce additional complexities
