Previous devices showed strain at 30% elongation and broke at 100%. In contrast, the new one functioned properly even when stretched to 150%.
Inertial sensors were equipped on the developed device, and the results measured by the sensors on the device can be transmitted even under 150% elongation.“Stretchable devices combining high-performance sensor integrated circuits based on solid-state electronics have been developed, but they lack the stretchability to accommodate large deformations of more than two times elongation.
The researchers state that no existing devices on the market can achieve both high accuracy and high repeatability in stretchable or highly deformable devices.Stretchable, wearable devices that can accurately sense physical and bioelectrical data are increasingly used for health monitoring and motion measurement. However, balancing the stretchiness needed for comfort with the rigidity required for precise data sensing is challenging.
Machine learning could enhance these devices, but to integrate this technology, stretchable hybrid wearables combining comfort and stable data processing must be developed. In this study, researchers focused on creating motion capture wearables with built-inTo provide stability while maintaining flexibility, the team developed heterogeneous-rigidity protective structures. These structures, which included a hard layer, an intermediate layer, and a soft layer, protected the electrical wiring.
In contrast, the new device with the protective structure remained undamaged at 100% elongation and functioned properly even when stretched to 150%. The device was also evaluated for its performance in tasks like recognizing finger-spelled letters and sign language. Current wearable devices struggle with parallel movements without finger, but the new heterogeneous-rigidity device accurately identified 91 percent to 98 percent of letters, depending on the data processing model used.Researchers believe that this technology could extend beyond finger spelling to recognize American Sign Language, which is a highly desired advancement.
