University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) welcomed its first babies of the year in the early hours of Wednesday. Several couples celebrated the arrival of their new children on New Year's Day, with the first baby born at 00:30 GMT.

The first-time father and his wife, Niraliben Patel, 28, were given a New Year's Day due date and said they had "hoped and prayed for such a blessing".Mr and Mrs Patel said they would be naming their daughter, who born at Leicester General Hospital, in a few days Their daughter, who has not yet been named, was born at Leicester Royal Infirmary and weighed 7lb 10oz .
