The state of New York has banned the Chinese AI assistant DeepSeek from government devices, citing concerns about user data harvesting and potential national security threats. DeepSeek surged to the top of the Apple App Store in January, outperforming established AI models, but its sudden popularity raised alarms among U.S. officials. The government worries that DeepSeek, owned by a Chinese hedge fund, could be used to collect intelligence and expose data to Chinese surveillance. This ban follows a December law in New York that implements strict guidelines for AI use by state agencies, emphasizing human oversight, transparency, and risk assessment.

“Public safety is my top priority and we’re working aggressively to protect New Yorkers from foreign and domestic threats,” Hochul said in a news release. “New York will continue fighting to combat cyber threats, ensure the privacy and safety of our data, and safeguard against state-sponsored censorship.”
In banning DeepSeek from New York state devices, Hochul’s office noted suspicions that the app “can be used to harvest user data and steal technology secrets.”signed in December
