This brand’s fantastical depiction of fashion came about after designer-duo Carly Mark and Ayla Argentina hit a creative wall last year.
Revamping the runway show into an anything-goes theatrical performance, Carly - a contemporary artist - and her former studio assistant, Ayla, migrated to fashion last year after their careers stopped bringing them a sense of joy. "I think we hit a wall working in art together. I was in my studio constantly making work, Ayla was assisting me, and I didn't feel like I was getting the momentum that I needed," said Carly backstage.
Fusing art and performance with a side of obscurity, yesterday's show did not dissapoint. Carly and Ayla conjured a cast of pannier-laden characters in upsidedown buttercup-hat's topped with melting rainbows, blueberry Maleficient horns and powder-pink princess hats – equipped with a tulle-trail the length of Rapunzel's hair. It was as though a graphic novel came to life, with all the damsels in distress, villains, and eccentric side-kicks banding together as one happy family.
More accurately, the characters were moulded by their very hands. The duo became their own bona fide puppet masters, custom fitting each hollographic cloak and spandex leotard, centimetre by centimetre, for their friends cast back in October.
