New York Police Department officers surround the pro-Palestinian encampment at Columbia University in New York City, on April 30, 2024. | Irie Sentner/POLITICONEW YORK — Police descended on Columbia University late Tuesday and arrested protesters in a dramatic move against a demonstration that has become a flashpoint of opposition to the Israel-Gaza war.
Officers in riot gear moved to clear a building that protesters had occupied since the night before after negotiations between the university and protesters failed to reach an agreement to stand down and Mayor Eric Adams warned that “outside agitators” had co-opted the demonstration. Earlier in the day, university spokesperson Ben Chang said in a statement that students occupying the building face expulsion.
Arrests by the New York Police Department at the campus in Upper Manhattan on April 18 sparked widespread outrage and calls by faculty for the resignation of university President Minouche Shafik. The atmosphere was tense Tuesday evening as large numbers of police arrived in the area in helmets and carrying zip-ties to detain demonstrators.
