The carry-on also contained a magazine with five bullets.
A passenger ticketed to fly to France was arrested at Newark Liberty on Tuesday after security found a gun in his carry-on bag, authorities said.
The Bedford N.Y. man was taken into custody by Port Authority police after Transportation Security Administration detected the handgun as it passed through an X-ray machine in Terminal B, the federal agency said. There was also a magazine loaded with five bullets in the carry-on, the TSA said. The man was planning to board a flight to Nice, France.Guns can be brought on commercial flights but they must be unloaded, packed in a locked, hard-sided case and checked in. Guns are transported in the belly of the plane during the flight. International travelers should also check gun laws at their destinations as well as with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the TSA said.
The gun is the 12th seized at the airport so far this year, according to the TSA. Authorities confiscated 20 guns last year and 14 and 12 in 2022 and 2021, respectively. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
