Gov. Gavin Newsom and some other state leaders challenged the legality of an anti-tax measure that made the November ballot. ): Over 1 million California voters signed petitions for the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act that would have required voters to approve any tax increase passed by the state Legislature. It also would require all local tax increases to be approved by two-thirds of voters, not a simple majority.
The people petitioned to take California back and be allowed to vote on the November ballot. Newsom got the state Supreme Court to block this measure, denying fundamental rights to the people of California. On Tuesday, Newsom refused to give his State of the State address in person — so no questions could be asked.
