A survey polled 5,000 people in Glasgow to find where is the happiest place to live, with East Renfrewshire town Newton Mearns coming out on top - even though it's not technically in the city!
Newton Mearns, an affluent suburb, seven miles from Glasgow city centre came out top of the poll by online retailer Furniturebox. They polled 5,000 people to find out where people were happiest in major cities across the UK.
Locations were ranked according to the beauty of the surroundings and green spaces, provision of good state schools and affordable housing, as well as access to quality pubs, restaurants, independent shops and cultural attractions.READ MORE: Pollokshields residents furious at Bonfire Night carnage as locals targeted in firework attacks “All 70 places on the list would have been worthy winners and show why the UK is such a wonderful place to live, loved by visitors from all over the world.
“Most of the locations in the top 70 are not the most affluent in their localities and have access to some affordable housing. The survey shows that the happiest places are not defined by wealth but by the quality of life within them.” Newton Mearns is one of the most expensive places to buy a home in Scotland, with the average asking price of a for sale home coming in at an eye-watering £421,000 according to Rightmove. Only St Andrews in Fife and Bearsden in East Dunbartonshire are more pricey.
Newton Mearns came in the top spot, and in second place in Glasgow was Dennistoun. Merchant City was third, Hillhead was fourth and Scotstoun was fifth.Join Glasgow Live's WhatsApp community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages.
