Liz Truss resigned from the role today and her successor could be in place as soon as one week. Ms Truss today announced her departure outside Downing Street, meaning she will be the country’s shortest serving Prime Minister in its history and sparking a behind the scenes scramble to find a replacement.
There will be no General Election as many have demanded and there will be no long-running leadership election as seen as far ago as this summer. Instead, Conservative MPs will be responsible for choosing the next leader, after discussions between party chair and Rossendale and Darwen MP Jake Berry and Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee.
Ben Wallace, the defence minister and Wyre and Preston North MP, is among the favourites at 11/1 despite have declined to stand last time around. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson is now third favourite at 4/1 only months after resigning in disgrace. Sources today have indicated he is likely to put his name forward again.
