England lost 2-1 to Spain and hopes of a bank holiday were dashed
Football isn't coming home for England and the hopes of an extra bank holiday have been dashed. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had been asked by Gary Neville on ITV on Sunday if there would be a bank holiday to mark England's success.
At the time, Gary Neville said: "60 million people are all asking the same question - are they getting a day off? Are they getting a bank holiday? It's on you." The Prime Minister replied: "I don't know about that. Let's get through the next few hours. Let's get their hands on that trophy. We need to mark it in some way but we'll have to see what that is...an appropriate way.
However, it was not meant to be as England lost to Spain 2-1 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. This means the next bank holiday will be Monday, August 26. Two extra one-off bank holidays were held across the UK in 2022, one for the Queen's platinum jubilee and another for her funeral. The King's coronation in May 2023 was also a bank holiday. Sir Keir previously supported calls for a bank holiday when England's women's football team made it to the World Cup final last year. Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey had earlier led calls for a one-off bank holiday.
He said: "The Three Lions are playing their first-ever final on foreign soil, and if they bring it home, the Government should bring home a bank holiday to celebrate."
