Jeff Ulbrich went to a dark place after the Patriots ran up the score in a 54-13 drubbing last year in Week 7. The Jets defensive coordinator has not forgotten what transpired that day, when Zach Wilson left with a knee injury early in the second quarter. The Patriots kept throwing the ball and scored 20 points in the fourth quarter of a game that really was over at halftime.
“There was a level of darkness I know within my own brain and soul,” Ulbrich said. “It was definitely trying.” Jets coach Robert Saleh and some players have tried to downplay the significance of what the Patriots did last year and if they’re using it as motivation for Sunday’s game between the two teams. Behind closed doors, rest assured that it has come up.“I remember the score,” he said. “I remember a lot of things. I remember it being 40-plus and shots still being taken on us. It is what it is, it’s our job as a defensive coaching staff and as a defense to stop that.
Ulbrich was asked directly: Did the Patriots break an unwritten rule by running up the score? “Yeah, I wasn’t fired up about it,” he said, smirking. “Try not to say too much. So, I’ve been told.” A lot has changed since that game. The Jets are 5-2, in second place in the AFC East and on a four-game winning streak. The Patriots are fresh off an embarrassing loss of their own, to the Bears, and are 3-4, in last place in the division. This is the first time the Jets have played New England with a better record in Week 8 or later since Week 12 of the 2001 season — Tom Brady’s first year as a starter.
