Amelia Huddleston took her feverish and coughing son to the local health clinic three times in the week he died. She believes her son could have survived if he'd had the right care.
An Emergency Warning has been issued for Tara, Kogan, Halliford, Wieambilla, Moonie, and Durong in QLD. For the latest, search onThe death of a three-year-old boy in Ngukurr in the Northern Territory has prompted calls to overhaul health services in remote communities.
"One of the fellas from his class put a little watch, there's an angel and a little car here," she said. The ABC isn't naming the little boy for cultural reasons. That left a junior nurse to take instruction from Sunrise Health and NT government doctors by telephone, for three-and-a-half hours."We didn't have a doctor there, they had to get answers over the phone."A post-mortem report, presented to his family by Sunrise Health, found the cause of death was a staphylococcus aureus infection, on which the penicillin antibiotic didn't work.
"The day before she died, I rang the clinic and said: 'Katherine Hospital said she's not in there, what's happening?"A nurse working at the clinic at the time told the ABC Ms Farrell was asked to come to the clinic many times for follow-up and review of persistent migraine headaches and other symptoms, and she refused.
Four former Sunrise Health nurses have told the ABC that Ngukurr and some of Sunrise Health's seven other clinics have been regularly undermanned with inexperienced staff, and there have been insufficient visits by doctors. The ABC is not naming some of the former nurses because they fear jeopardising their current employment.
Sunrise Health has rejected the nurses' understaffing and inexperience allegations, but would not provide a response on the record."We had doctors coming in for two days a week, so the continuity of care was a huge issue," she said.
